Are test switches required on emergency lighting products?
Yes, all our emergency lighting products are equipped with test switches to comply with AS/NZS 60598.2.22 Clause 22.17.
What is AS/NZS 60598.2.22?
AS/NZS 60598.2.22 is the Australian and New Zealand safety standard for emergency lighting luminaires and exit signs. This standard sets out the specific safety requirements that emergency lighting products must meet to be sold and installed in Australia and New Zealand.
What does Clause 22.17 require?
Clause 22.17 of the standard requires emergency lighting products to have a means of testing the emergency operation. This ensures that the emergency lighting system can be properly tested and maintained throughout its service life.
Why are test switches important?
Test switches allow you to:
- Verify that the emergency lighting operates correctly
- Check battery backup functionality
Where is the test switch located on IP-rated products?
For products with an IP rating such as IP65, the test switch is located inside the product where battery replacement is performed. This internal placement maintains the product's ingress protection rating while still providing the required test functionality.
To access the test switch on IP-rated products:
- Open the access panel or cover (typically where battery replacement occurs)
- Locate the test switch inside the enclosure
- Perform the test as required
- Reseal the enclosure to maintain the IP rating
Important: Always ensure the enclosure is properly resealed after testing to maintain the IP protection rating.
Which products include test switches?
All our emergency lighting products include test switches as standard.
