IC-4 is the highest insulation contact rating under the Australian luminaire standard AS/NZS 60598.2.2. It means the downlight has been tested at its maximum working temperature range (40°C ambient) and can be safely covered with building insulation without risk of overheating or fire from thermal buildup.
An IC-4 rated luminaire allows insulation to be placed directly over and abutting the fitting, maintaining both thermal envelope performance and fire safety compliance. This eliminates the need to leave gaps in ceiling insulation around the downlight.
The IC-4 rating has no relation to fire ratings or AS 1530.4.
