The Umbra Emergency Battens can be installed as non-maintained, maintained or switched maintained. This article explains how the operating mode is selected and how to wire the fitting for non-maintained operation.
Does the batten use a jumper plug or a link wire?
The operating mode is set on the terminal block using a link wire between the L and L' terminals.

Non-maintained wiring
In non-maintained mode the LED is off while mains power is present. If the unswitched active fails, the LED switches on from the battery for the rated emergency duration.

Frequently asked questions
The LED stays on all the time in a non-maintained install. Why? Check that there is no link wire between L and L', and that nothing is connected to L'. Any active on L' will turn the LED on during normal operation.
The LED does not come on when mains fails. Why? Confirm the unswitched active is connected to L (not L'), that the battery has been charged for the full initial charge period, and that the battery connector inside the fitting is plugged in.
Can I convert a non-maintained install to maintained later? Yes. Isolate the circuit and fit a link wire between L and L', or feed L' from a switched active for switched maintained operation.
Important
- The unswitched active must be taken from the same circuit as the normal lighting in the area so the fitting responds to a local circuit failure.
- Installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 2293.1.
